1 furnished caravan, 4 lovely campsites by the river Dao
Quinta da Abelenda rent a fully equipped caravan and 4 camp sites on beautiful spots with lots of space. Ideal for those who like rural camping in Portugal.
Although there is plenty of space (4 hectares) for more accommodation on the quinta, we don't want more than this one caravan, two cottages and the 4 campsites, because we like to keep it quiet on the quinta..
The camp sites and the caravan have a beautiful view over the valley and of the other side of the stream, where the horses are.
I is only 10 minutes walk to the wide river Dão, which is here part of the Lake of Aguieira. We have canoes available.
We also have several bikes for hiring to make a ride on the Ecopista do Dão, which used to be a railroad but is now transformed to a beautiful cycle track, to Viseu (48 km from Quinta da Abelenda), following for miles the river Dão.
You can do horseback riding as well, along the river Dão.
The caravan is situated on a terrace with lots of oak trees creating shade, with a beautiful view over the valley. The campsites are located on other terraces, between oaks and cork oaks and beautiful views of the valley and the stream. Every location is special and has a lot of space.
Breakfast
You can choose whether you want to have breakfast or not. You can pick up a basket with breakfast at the reception. If you rent the caravan breakfast can be brought to the caravan as well. The breakfast normally consists of two kinds of bread, cheese, ham, jam, butter, cornflakes or muesli, yogurt, coffee, tea and orange juice.
Horseback riding.
We care for our horses in the most natural way possible. The five of them are outside all day and night, grazing, eating hay or having a rest and enjoying each other’s company. It's a pleasant and peaceful sight. To stop the weeds from growing too much in winter and spring and to give the horses something extra to nibble, we sometimes let them out of the big pasture into the rest of the “quinta”. All five of the horses are of the “Cruzado Português” breed, that is a hybrid of Portuguese races.
Since we keep our horses with us, even when they get a little older, two of them are already retired and can only be cuddled and used for short, light rides. By appointment we organize 1 or 2 hour rides in the surroundings with the other three horses. Therefore we can guide up to three riders with the horse on a lead and two riders with the guide on horseback.
The Serra do Caramulo, traditionally known for its pure air, is one of the most beautiful mountains of Portugal. It is located only a 40 minute drive away from Quinta da Abelenda and is most definitely worth a visit, ideal for walks.
Cycling in Portugal over the Ecopista do Dão
The former railway Linha do Dão, closed in 1988, connected Santa Comba Dão with the city of Viseu. In 2011 this railway was transformed into a spectacular bike and walking path, called the Ecopista do Dão. With 49 km, it is not only the longest Ecopista of Portugal, but probably the most beautiful.
A large part of this path, which passes in front of Quinta da Abelenda, runs along the banks of the river Dão. Every bend in the river is followed by a bend in the Ecopista, with another view of the river. Because of the fact that it used to be a railway line, it is easy to cycle. There are no steep slopes in this mountainous area and you will be cycling in a very beautiful landscape.
